Planning a wedding will probably be one of the most (if not THE most) difficult task you will ever undertake. One year of planning for one day incorporating vendors and people and guests for a 6 to 8 hour stretch that is your wedding.
It is especially difficult if you have a budget to plan your wedding on a budget because besides all the organizational tasks you are looking for bargains at the same time!
While you may have found this googling around for money saving tips, as that is the most common thing to be searching on for the internet and you will find many, this article gives tips on how to stay organized from the get go.
While money saving tips are helpful, there are so many that it can be overwhelming, especially when they are mutually exclusive such as “booking a year in advance to lock in rates” to “book at the last minute and take advantage of desparate venues who have had cancellations”.
My point is that if you stay organized from the very start, you are more likely to stay on budget, you are definitely more likely to STAY SANE!
Here’s what you need:
- a three ring binder
- a three ring hole punch (because surprisingly not all materials have three hole punches in it .. who knew?)
- dividers for your binder, preferably with color tabs, preferably already punched.
I would even start labeling them with categories for planning your wedding like:
- wedding budget
- wedding checklist
- wedding timeline
- wedding venue
- reception venue
- wedding catering
- wedding favors
- wedding gown
- groom tuxedoAnd so on.
And that’s actually it. If you bought or were already given something fancy, feel free to use it, but the above works for me and works better and I will explain why.
Now here’s the key:
When it comes to wedding planning, you have to be organized. You also have to, when trying to stick to planning your wedding on a budget, think of it more like a business and not something to get emotionally involved in.
That is kind of tough, because you want to be emotionally involved. It’s your wedding! But that’s also the same kind of emotion that causes not only wedding vendors to boost their prices up so high but also for you all to pay those inflated prices! Wedding markups can be as much as 200%!!
You need to think of it as a business you need to keep on a budget. That is why I prefer the normal binder (emotionless) versus the fancy wedding binder (fancy and FILLED with emotion).
The bottom line is if you don’t have an organizational system working for you already , and you’re not one of those organized types (like me!), you NEED to be one or need to find a friend who is one (like me…) to help you plan your wedding on a budget.
Stay happy and sane! Kennly —–
